DNA research at the Max Planck Insitute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin

Basic research on the interaction of genes

The Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics works on the analysis of the genome of humans and other organisms with the aim of elucidating the molecular causes of human diseases and thus contributing to the development of cause-specific treatment methods.

The research field of bioinformatics is developing rapidly and dynamically, which made it necessary to expand the Institute at its Berlin location.

The overall project is divided into the construction of Tower III and the renovation of Towers I and II. Between March 2011 and November 2014, the Institute building located in Berlin-Dahlem was expanded to include the construction of Tower III on an existing basement level.

The renovation of Tower III took place from November 2013 to October 2016. At the end of the measure, Tower I was renovated by the end of 2024.

The Institute houses, among other things, a laboratory with nine high-performance microscopes. This brings very high requirements regarding air humidity and temperature stability, freedom from vibrations, supply of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and compressed air, which had to be implemented structurally.
