Continued use of existing properties

Renovation and continued use of existing buildings

The continued use of existing buildings at the many MPG locations plays a key role in reducing CO2 greenhouse emissions and construction waste.

Rethinking the purpose and use of construction measures

The purpose and benefits of construction projects must be viewed differently today. From a sustainability perspective, the continued use of existing buildings is also a key consideration.

The building sector accounts for 35% of energy consumption and 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany.

In view of these facts, decarbonization in the construction and real estate sector is of the utmost importance. The renovation and continued use of existing buildings plays a central role, even if this repeatedly reaches its limits when it comes to research buildings. However, the MPG has nevertheless decided to take such supposedly more complex routes. The general administration in Munich is also currently being renovated while operations are ongoing.

In Jena, for example, the newly established Institute of Geoanthropology decided not to pursue the originally planned new building, but instead to renovate and continue to use two existing buildings in the spirit of sustainability. The progress of this construction project will be reported on in the future on 'Building for Research'.
